Wash, Disinfect & Inspect Regularly
Submitted by: Anne Johnson - Avian Antics Bird Toys - November 11, 1996 Toys need to be washed, disinfected and inspected regularly for possible safety concerns. Make it part of your routine and change the toys weekly when you do your thorough cage cleaning. Remember, hookbills have powerful beaks and can snap or break toys creating sharp edges or other safety hazards. Use a 10% bleach solution to disinfect toys and rinse well.

Into The Jacuzzi!
Submitted by: Carolyn Swicegood - vos@bridge.net on July 22, 1997 One of my favorite "sports" is hunting for like-new quality baby toys for parrots. They can be found at flea markets and yard sales for a mere fraction of their original price. I enjoy browsing a huge "Swap Shop" in Fort Lauderdale, Florida for quality used baby toys. Most of them cost only twenty-five to fifty cents. When I have collected a good number of them, I put the larger and sturdier ones in my jacuzzi with ten percent Clorox and let the waterjets and clorox do the cleaning. After a thorough rinsing, I let them air dry. I clean the smaller ones in my dishwasher. The fragile ones with music boxes go into a plastic bag which I fill with ozone, using an ozone unit for aquariums and an airstone. The bag is sealed for twenty-four hours, after which time the toys are germ free. When all the toys are clean and dry, I attach plastic C clips made for babies by Gerbers, and give them to my birds and to my friends' birds. All my babies go to their new homes with almost a lifetime supply of toys, especially their favorite ones! Happy hunting!

Awesome Way Of Cleaning!
Submitted by: Jessica Since I live In Minnesota, when the weather gets cold, I can't use the hose anymore. So why not use the bathtub!!! It works really well. All you have to do is 1. Take out all the toys, foodishes, etc 2. Take your cage and stick it in the tub any way it fits. 3. Turn on the shower and let it sit in there for a little bit. Then take the disenfectant to it, scrub it twice and then rinse. It works like a glove. PLEASE try it. I do it a least every week and if your bird sneezes, clean it every other day. If you have comments, I'll be sure to answer.- November 27, 1998

Easy Clean-up Snack
Submitted by: Meagan - July 25, 1999 I just got a green cheek conure, and I spend every second of the day with him!! But I soon realized that when I give him a snack, he makes a HUGE mess.

One day we got McDonalds for lunch & Cricket (the bird) loved to climb into the sack, so
we got a gallon size ziploc bag and put cheerios (or anything the bird likes) in it & got a 6 in. tall & 3 in. wide cup and stuck it in the bag to keep it open. (lay the bag on it's side)The clean-up is simple, just throw the bag away!
Birds n Ways note: Be sure you supervise your bird. If the bag collapses, the bird could suffocate.

Steam it!!!
Submitted by: Charles Geary - February 23, 2000 I purchased a hand-held steamer about a month ago for cleaning cages. It is great! I will never go back. It makes cleaning and disinfecting the cages, bowls and toys a breeze. I have three large birds and they are messy. This method only uses water to clean and disinfect, so it is very safe and fast. If steaming the cages, always make sure the birds are removed.

Clean Off Poop Scale Residue
Submitted by: Denice Newton - paritluvr@aol.com - July 25, 2000 Use CLR lime and rust remover to get the hard poop scale residue off of your cages and playstands. Caution! Don't use it anywhere near your birds and rinse thoroughly and dry it before bringing your bird near it. It works great! The chrome tray on my playstand looks like new again. I wouldn't use it on wood though. Won't rinse well enough.

Quicker Cleaning!
Submitted by: Nomi - ybreptile@aol.com - October 02, 2000 This might be a bit easier for you. Instead of putting new newspaper or whatever you use on the bottom of the bird cage, try putting an old PHONE BOOK jon the bottom of the cage to catch any poop or old food. Every day, just rip of the top pages of the book! And a new layer of paper is already underneath!

Baby wipes
Submitted by: Lisa L. - lisa.long@nutshell.net - August 12, 2001 We have a Greencheek conure that is out of her cage most of the day. She is mostly potty trained, but when she makes a mistake and poops on our clothes, furniture, or carpet we use Baby wipes to wipe the poop right off. If you get the poop while it is fresh, it will come right off.

Dispose of the baby wipes properly after use so your bird doesn't chew on it. The solution in the baby wipes may not be good for your bird.

Removing poop from hard and soft surfaces
Submitted by: Reena - kontakt@birdlovers.nu - August 20, 2001 I have lived with parrots for over twenty years and during those years it has been a constant battle against bird poop. Even if there are special solutions on the market that will remove bird poop I never used one (mostly becase those solution can't be bought in the country I live in) and I had to come up with some ideas of my own :
Bird toy can be used for All Size Birds
Hard surfaces (Floor, cage, perches, toys)
Poop can easily be removed by soaking a sponge under hot tap water then (just be careful so the water isn't too hot for your hands). Gently press some of the warm water over the bird's poop. Wait for half a minute and then go back and wipe the poop off with something dry. Sometimes you might have to use some more water or perhaps wait a bit longer, but I think this method works very well.If the poop is very sticky then use a sponge with a rough side to "scrub it off". The warm water decreases the time you have to scrub. The warm water method can also be used on perches, toys and other things...just put whatever you wish to clean in warm water for few minutes, rinse it under clean water and wipe it dry.
Soft surfaces (fabric, carpets)
To remove firm bird poop on soft surfaces, take a piece of kichen roll paper and put over the poop. Make sure you don't rub it in by accident. Gently press down the paper on the poop, using enough pressure to make the paper and the poop get "contact". Tthen lift up the paper and voilá - the poop comes up with the paper. Once you have lifted up the poop, just clean as usual and what's left of the poop will just disappear instead of getting rubbed in the fabric.

Getting Poop Off
Submitted by: Farah-- BIRDS RULE!!! - Milstar89@aol.com - November 18, 2001 All you have to do is run the toys through hot water. If it is wood, you must use dish washing liquid and a sponge to scrub it off. Set aside a special sponge for the birds toys and other things, such as water bottle, seed and water hoppers, etc. ALWAYS USE DISH WASHING LIQUID TO WASH TOYS!

Made Cleaning Easy
Submitted by: kal - kali55@cox.net - February 26, 2007
Bird toy can be used for All Size BirdsI try to keep cleaning as easy as can be and always thinking of new things to keep my Amazon Boo's living space as clean as can be. I use baby's recieving blankets or flannel sheets cut to size for his trays. They are lighr and take up little room when I do his laundry.
But one thing always bothered me.....his aprons. So difficult to clean. Awkward is a better word. I finally stored them away. Now on the floor all around his cage are ceramic tile. I was lucky to pick up a box of 5"x5" tiles at a yard sale. Boo is a creature of habit. He poops in the same ole spots most of the time. Now all i have to do is pick up that one tile (whichever it is) and clean it rther than the whole apron/ It also is very smart looking with the design. Almost matches my kitchen Island lol

Perfect Scrub For Cage Grates
Submitted by: R.Rosenberger - April 24, 2007
Bird toy can be used for All Size BirdsWhen cleaning the cage floors or grates I bought some denture cleaning toothbrushes. They are bigger than a standard toothbrush and the bristles are also sturdier too. They work great on scrubbing off that stubborn stuck on poop without having to get your hands near it, and the bristles hold up well without bending. I also found out by accident a clean toothbrush or denture brush makes a wonderful bird toy. You could drill a hole in the handle or tie a tight loop on the brush end and hang it in the cage. Try hanging a couple too. I found that my bare eyed too(Oobi)loves to run around on the floor (supervised of course)carrying it/dragging it around, and also loves to play fetch with it.
