Shoelaces, Paper, Bottle Caps
Submitted by: Mark - August, 1996 I can not tell you how much our halfmoon conure loves shoe strings! We go through about 9 pairs a week easily. He loves to chew off the tips of the shoe strings like they are new pin feathers. He also enjoys ripping up tissue paper and paper towels, but shoestrings are his fav. I have also collected milk bottle tops in which I place a whole in the center of each one and string them on a few shoe strings. This too is a favorite toy. (Keep the shoestrings trimmed, to prevent toes being caught in the frayed ends).

Beads, Spools and Leather Toys
Submitted by: Marilyn - July 24, 1996 Our craft store has lots of little bins of different sizes & shapes of wood beads & spools. You can also order leather scraps from Bird Toy makers. Cut your own leather straps & leather pieces & string them on with the beads. Make some little ones that your bird can hand-hold & some to tie on to the cage. Pretty soon you will see the world in terms of potential bird use....would my bird like to play with that. Our Jardine's loves to play with latex dog toys. Always monitor to make sure that they are play safe.

Household Items & Ideas for Feather Pluckers
Submitted by: Anne Johnson, Avian Antics Bird Toys - November 4, 1996
Bird toy can be used for All Size BirdsToys do not always need to be expensive and store bought to be fun and entertaining. Some safe household items that make good toys are plastic bottle caps, paper towels, plain white paper, frayed plastic milk jugs, cardboard rolls from paper towels and wrapping paper, newspaper, a new mop head etc. Other items such as natural whisk brooms, wireless clothespins and wooden balls can amuse birds for hours. The milk jugs, mop heads and whisk brooms are good toys for birds who feather pluck.
Another fun idea is to take a plastic bottle from a beverage and put beads, clothespins, or other brightly colored safe objects, into the bottle and put the cap back on ( old toy parts work great for this toy). Watch your bird go nuts trying to get to the pieces. Be creative and come up with ideas that your bird finds challenging and stimulating.
Making toys can be fun and save money for those who have time. Items such as wood pieces, pony beads, sisal rope, etc.can be found at most craft stores. Vegetable food coloring or unsweetened Kool-aid can be used to color the wood shapes. Use vegetable dyes only. Other dyes may be harmful if ingested.
You can also purchase toys marketed for human children and give them to your birds, such as rattles, plastic keys, building blocks, etc. Just remember that child safe is not necessarily bird safe.

Make Your Own Acrylic Toys
Submitted by: Peggy Duncan - roxzy@sierratel.com - March 31, 1997 I went to a plastic company where they sell acrylic scrapes by the pound. You can pick your own pieces. I got every color they had, all the flourescent colors & lots more. Also tubes and blocks. I used a scroll saw to cut shapes, hearts etc., but found the chop saw to work best. Then I attached pieces to a dog chain. I only paid $1.50 a lb. and 5 lbs. is a lot of toys.
Bird toy can be used for All Size Birds
Also at a $.98 store, don't know if you have them in your town, but they always have lots of baby toys, keys, rattles, chewy toys, blocks etc. Oh, one more, Wal-mart has a bucket of colored plastic spools, in the toy dept. that, believe it or not, my GWM has to chew on for more than 2 seconds to destroy. They actually hold up real well!

Glove Surprise
Submitted by: Lorraine K. Wade - lorraine@idirect.com - February 28, 1997 Get a pair or cotton work gloves...either from the nursery or hardware store .. mine are "natural" colour, i.e no dye.
Bird toy can be used for All Size Birds
Into each "finger", I put a little surprise... a plastic bead, a cracked nut, a cork from a wine bottle, a plastic bottle cap, a short piece of rope with a knot in it, etc. I fold each finger upon itself and secure with a stitch and a knot made from cotton knitting yarn. (use bright colours!).
I then fill the "hand" part of the glove with more goodies...a few pieces (2-3 inches long) of apple tree twigs, a couple of milk bones dog biscuits, some scrunched up plain copier paper, some circles cut from toilet paper cores, pieces of cotton rag, etc etc...
I "decorate" the glove by sewing/tying things on it such as big plastic buttons, wooden and plastic beads, etc. I then hang the glove in the cage.... At first, the bird did not know what to do with the glove...it took a while to sink in, but now, ECHO knows that the glove hides "goodies" and he will work at it to get to the good stuff! I make a new one, with recycled items about each month or so...
A good way to hang this kind of toy to the cage is by using the cheap plastic "C" shaped shower curtain hangers...a package of about 10 is $2.00 or so... or quik links for larger birds.

Puzzle Toys
Submitted by: Lorraine K. Wade - lorraine@idirect.com - June 5, 1997 One example is to cut a piece of hard wood (maple or elm is good for durability) about 3" by 5" by 1/2" thick, and drill a few holes in it, maybe 3 rows of 2 holes each. The holes should accomodate the size of bolts you will be using. I screw stainless nuts, washers and bolts through, (obtained through a marine supply store) some facing one way, some facing the opposite way, so the bird can play at unscrewing them! Make a hole in the top of the piece of wood to hang it from. It keeps my macaw occupied for long periods...the CAG is still young for that.
Bird toy can be used for All Size Birds
Or you can make a second of these maples drilled pieces, and thread leather strips, or pieces of rope, through the holes and knot the ends... the bird pulls one end, and the other end comes up! You can tie colourful plastic beads on the rope or leather....

wood bucket from craft store
Submitted by: Joan - pmsmith@neilnet.com - July 30, 1997 My idea for a self entertaining treat type toy... Go to a craft supply store or hardware store that sells small wooden objects for crafters to paint. Find an "unfinished" wood bucket, which you can then paint with food dye in bright colours. Attach a safe chain or piece of natural leather to the handle of the bucket with a quick link and quick link at the other end to hang from a perch or attach to play stand. Place a treat in the bucket (sunflower seed or veggie). Show it to your bird. See how long it takes him to figure how to draw up the bucket and retrieve the treat. My greencheeked conure, figured out how to draw up the leather inch by inch holding each section with his foot and then his beak until he reached the bucket and the treat. Learned this in about 10 min. on his first try! Enjoys playing with the bucket even when its empty and because its wood he gets chewing enjoyment from it too. Try it you'll like it.

Coconut Hanging Toy
Submitted by: Eark&Marcia Barrett - homeskillit@msn.com - August 02, 1997 To make this toy , saw 1/3 of top of coconut off. Scrape out the inside ( I eat the contents). Drill a small hole in side 1/4 in from the edge and hang with a chain to free standing perch or cage. The top peice can be hung with a peice of leather with strips tied in knots for another toy. Our Senegal (Lenne) loves to get inside and talk (I think he likes to hear himself) We also put peanuts inside for a treat. For larger birds they will pull the chain up to get the treats out of the coconut.

Circus Tightrope
Submitted by: Terese King - TKing20390@aol.com - August 23, 1997 This one is very simple. I took three strands of leather and knotted them together to make about 8 feet. I strung a "tightrope" starting from my Sun's cage to a wall and secured it with a small eyebolt. About every 18 inches to two feet, I hung toys like a millet holder, cotton rope pieces with wood toys, a plastic ring, etc. Max plays for hours and now has some very strong little legs.

Popsicle & Bead Chewies
Submitted by: Diane Coleman - Alaskagain@aol.com - August 28, 1997 Dye a dozen or so popsicle sticks (craft store) with Kool Aid or food coloring. Take stainless steel wire strong enough so the bird can't break it, make a small loop at one end over a quick link, wrap the wire tightly around the straight part and crimp down (do the same thing to the other end after sticks are strung.) Drill a hole in one end or the middles of all the sticks, then string them up on the wire with beads, natural wooden spools, you name it. The wire can be twisted into a circle with a small loop at the top or hung vertically in the cage. If your bird is an acrobat, attach both ends to the top of the cage. If the bird doesn't seem to want to chew the sticks, break the ends off so that the uneven wood fibers are sticking out.

Birdie Golf
Submitted by: Corinne - corinne@vicon.net - August 31, 1997 Take plastic golf balls (the ones with the holes), wood, beads whatever and use a shoelace to string them together. I also will cut a slit in the golf ball and push through an almond or bead to really peak their interest. From my Senegal to my Cockatoo they LOVE it. Note: Be sure to trim off frayed ends of the shoelace.

Tissue Plucking
Submitted by: Tonya Walker - September 03, 1997 This is a great idea for birds who pluck feathers or just have to keep their beak busy! Tissue plucking! Get a tissue (or toilet paper) and some yarn. Take the toilet paper and put the middle of it over your finger to make a cone like shape. Now take the tissue (or toilet paper) off and try to keep it at that shape. Now take the yarn and wrap it tightly around the tissue in a spiral sort of way. Leave spaces in between so they are able to get to the tissue. Now tie a knot at both ends of the tissue and leave a little extra room at the top to hang from the top of the cage. Voila! An instant tissue plucker! Your bird will just love something to his his/her teeth..oh..I mean beak into : )

12 Knotted Strings Even Do The Trick!
Submitted by: Brittany Moss - September 05, 1997 Mocha, our cockatiel hen, didn't really pay attention to any of the toys we gave her, except the ones with leather that she could chew on. She chews on everything, so the leather was a big hit! One day she was getting bored with the leather, and I wanted to get her a new toy:- But I wasn't about to go to the bird/pet shop and waste our money on stuff she was going to ignore later. So, I figured, why don't I just MAKE one?!
Bird toy can be used for Small&Medium Size Birds
I have different color string (it kinda looks like woven floss, and kids weave bracelets out of them.. sound farmiliar?) that I haven't used in a while, so I thought I might use some of that for the toy. I took four different colors of the string and cut them, leaving about four inches (three?) for me to knot, and a long strip for me to knot all of the knotted strings together for the cage on the top. I knotted them, leaving NO spot without a knot. Then I repeated this about 12-15 times (12-15 knotted strings, I mean). THEN I took a seperate string, and tied the tops (above all the knots) of the knots together. After that, I tied all the strings leaving a mess up top. AFTER THAT (ok, ok, I know this is taking forever! Sorry.) I took a keychain (The tiny kind, so she can't get her beak or head stuck in it) and threaded it thru, and then onto her cage top so it would stay, and dangle down.
I wasn't sure if Mocha would like it, but it turned out to be a really big hit. She still loves it even after a month! I would recommend you only make this toy for medium and small parrots, and not the really big kind (They could easily destroy it!). Good luck!

Square With Scraps
Submitted by: Deanna Antomori - dantomori@tln.net - September 11, 1997 I found this toy and figured I could make it cheaper. You need a square or round ring or acrylic or metal. (you can get these through Fowlplay. Just do a search with those words.) Then you purchase a scrap of material at a sewing store or Walmart.
Bird toy can be used for All Size Birds
You cut the material into strips of 6 inches. Take each strip and tie it around the ring or square. Tie it in knots, tightly, leaving the spare fabric loose. Attach the ring or square to the top of the cage by a Quick Link.
This is designed for larger birds, I have them for my macaw and cockatoo, but smaller birds, made in smaller sizes, would probably like it too. I know the rings and squares can be had in many different sizes.

Stress Reliever
Submitted by: Jannis - lorphanannie@peachnet.campus mci.net - October 14, 1997 WARNING!!!!THIS TOY SHOULD BE MADE ACCORDING TO BIRD SIZE TO AVOID ANY PROBLEMS.
Bird toy can be used for All Size Birds
Step- 1- Supplies needed: Jute -1 ball available most variety stores
pair of scissors or sharp knife
piece of cardboard/small book depending on the length you want toy to be
Step- 2- Loop twine around an around the cardboard until you have desired thickness of toy you want.
Step- 3- Cut a length of twine long enough to run under one end of loops: run twine under one end of loops, pull loops together
knot this twine to secure group.
Step- 4- Using scissors or sharp knife, cut the opposite end of loops that are already tied together. This forms a tassel of sorts.
Step- 5- Plait two or three strands of loose strings together until all loose strings are plaited. This can then be hung or attached to the sides of the cage. Take care to do this in a manner to assure safeness for your bird.

Beaded Chain Fun
Submitted by: Ava Arechavala - gryphon@humboldt1.com - November 04, 1997 I use Stainless Steel Beaded Chain (the kind that is used to hold bathtub plugs) to make hanging toys for my cockatiels. They love it! You can string large and medium unpainted or safely dyed wooden/plastic beads, spools, rawhide squares/rounds, leather pieces from the chain, also. I have even hung a bell from the bottem of a length of chain. The tiels spend hours playing with the chain. You can buy it by the foot at most hardware stores but I reccomend that you pay the little bit extra for stainless, not brass or chrome plated. You can also buy all the parts for hanging your new toy. Happy Toymaking!

Birdy Bell
Submitted by: Pam And Sarah Moore - October 24, 1997 A shiny bell with cloth covering on the outside. Hanging by three medium sized rings for the bird to climb up and down as a challenge, for at the top there is a small bowl as big as your palm filled with a reward for the birds good deed. For a harder challenge shake it slightly to make it wiggle and it will be a little harder. Keep giving it more of a shake to make it harder. As the bird gets used to the challenge then buy one that has a slippery outside for more of a challenge. Check the bell clapper to be sure it can't be bitten off and swallowed.

Shoe String and Snack Top
Submitted by: Kevin and Amy Kent with Amelia - kevink@iserv.net - February 09, 1998 We take the top from a planters cheese balls package. Poke a small hole near the center and thread a (you guessed it) shoe string through it. Once we hang this on the outside of the cage, it takes about 3 minutes before our cherry headed conure is hanging upside down by one foot and growling at this thing while she tries to wrestle it into submission. Fun for her; a break for us.

Leather Laces
Submitted by: Tom - TDEKKER@AOL.COM - March 15, 1998 Purchase a set of leather boot laces, your bird will love to chew on them. To make it interesting I use practice golf balls, the ones with holes. Use the leather laces to suspend the golf ball, as well you can run additional pieces of leather trough the remaining holes, secured with tight knots.

Wooden Chew Toys
Submitted by: julie - chcinc@exis.net - March 02, 1998 Many craft stores have small and med. sized "parts" for crafts projects. These are usually fine-grained, unfinished wood -- perfect for chewing!! I use non-toxic food coloring and a strong toxin-free twine to put together a great toy. Most of the wooden pieces come in small bags with up to 10 pieces for around $1.
Bird toy can be used for Medium&Large Size Birds
I divide various shapes in bowls of water colored with the different colored food coloring and soak until the color is absorbed (maybe 10 min or longer if desired)
Then I string together whatever shapes come to mind and hang on the bird cage or playpen. My Amazons love these toys and they are much less expensive than similar toys found in pet stores.

Paper Towel Rolls
Submitted by: SueAnn - snyiri@bhfs.bellhowell.com - March 11, 1998 Hang the finished paper towel rolls from the top of the cage. The birds love to chew on them and sometimes even play peek-a-boo with each other thru the open ends. They just love to tear the rolls apart, but if the roll ends up on the bottom of the cage I find that they won't touch it. They like it when it's hanging.

Colorful Wooden Chew Toys
Submitted by: Tiffany Cady - TCADY@PROPOINT.COM - March 13, 1998 I buy the pieces of wood that come in packages at Pet Shops, usually in the rodent section, but now often in the bird section too. They are dyed different bright colors and fruit flavored, for chewing, and come in different shapes and sizes about 10 to a package for a few bucks. With a drill they easily become hanging toys. Just drill holes through them and use any manner of stringing item, such as rope, wire , pipe cleaners, or the chain like used on key chains. You can add beads, dry macaroni, pieces of old material etc, between the wood peices to add extra fun. My birds love to chew on the wood but won't hold single peices in their hands. this will make 2-3 toys for much less than you buy them pre-made. Another toy I hear many birds like is LEGOS!

string or leather
First, take the string or leather and make triple knots (If you're using string, twist 2 strands of string together, then make the triple knots). You can also put beads on the rope. Tree House Paradise
Submitted by: Chloe Rood - Mrood@hooked.net - April 09, 1998 You will need:
Bird toy can be used for All Size Birds
cardboard (light weight works best)
duct tape
scissors
Note:The size of the tree house depends on the size of the bird(s) and cage.
First, cut a strip of cardboard and form it into a square. Then tape the ends together. Next cut two more squares out of the cardboard. Tape the squares onto the top and bottom of the strip taped together so that you can see through it. After that, hang it up. Birds love to hang around in it and eventually, ripping it up. When that happens, you know it's time to make another one!

Ropes And Ties
Submitted by: Melissa Cotten - itwfpg@mindspring.com - April 30, 1998 If you put plastic beads on leather string and tie knots in between the beads (leaving about an inch space) and hang it anywhere in the cage, your birds will love to climb up and down them. If you weave the string through the bars of the cage, they like to nibble the string apart also.

Climbing Ropes
Submitted by: bailey - June 17, 1998 My birds also love shoe laces. While I'm not sure which of us is more attracted by color, I buy the longest rainbow colored laces I can find. I have braided these together to make a rope approximately 3 feet in length, found the center & hung it from a ceiling hook, then attached a 1/2 in. dowel in the & another at the bottom, thus making a double perch. I have added other hanging things to keep each bird busy on its respective perch, sometimes including veggies or crackers (attached W/a clothespin.) Also, my sister found some rather thick twine and made a macram`e rope, attached to wooden rings at each end. Very portable & useful.

Ring Acrobatics
Submitted by: Elizabeth Murray - June 21, 1998 Materials needed:
Bird toy can be used for Medium Size Birds
1. Ball of sisal rope - Walmart by the laundry items
2. One package swimming pool rings 2 to 4 to a package.
The rings are made of sturdy plastic and are weighted so
children can dive into the pool and retrieve them. Our Walmart
pool dept. sometimes places the rings on sale for $1.00 a pkg.
3. Scissors
Instructions:
1. Cut 24" length of sisal rope
2. Leaving enough length at the beginning of the sisal to attach the rings to top of cage, start knotting. Every three to four knots attach a ring in the knot.
3. Hang the rings or ring from the top of the cage by knotting the sisal. After knotting the sisal to the cage fray the ends.
This keeps your bird from untying the sisal so quickly.
Your bird will spend hours playing loop the loop on the rings, swinging on the rings and chewing the sisal.

The Gonzo Spinner
Submitted by: Jillian Lepiez - lepiez@pathway.com - August 15, 1998 Hi,
Bird toy can be used for Small&Medium Size Birds
My green-cheeked conure (Gonzo) loves his spinner. I bought a set of 6 woven rattan/raffia coasters at a "dollar store", soaked them in hot water for a night to get rid of excess dye then strung some beads on a chain, making sure that the last bead is held securely somehow. Then I inserted the chain through the center of one coaster and added more beads on top of the coaster. If the chain is small and the hole you make in the coaster is large the coaster will spin when the bird gets on it for a ride. Make the chain long enough so that the bird can get his whole body on the chain and not hit his head on whatever you hang it from! I used a "D" link to lock it to his play perch so he can't hurt himself. The coaster will wear out eventually since it is a soft material but my conure doesn't chew incessantly so I haven't had to replace it yet!

Rope fun
Submitted by: Lisa Akers - jackak10@ipa.net - September 24, 1998 Use various colored ropes and knot them several times with large knots, tie them to the top of the cage or sides. My umbie cockatoo loves to play with 'em, chew 'em and of course bite them clean off the cage. You will have to reattach them often. I also have used leather string with ribbons and the string to make toys. She really seems to like the bright colors. I have often caught her using these toys as a tool to scratch herself !

2 Ideas from Apollo, the cockatiel!!
Submitted by: Kara - Silver5577@aol.com - October 03, 1998 squawk!! Hello!!
Bird toy can be used for Small&Medium Size Birds
My owner, used to to give me those expensive toys from big fancy bird shops, boy was she ever DUMB!!! Lately, she has been kinda broke, and started giving me hand made, really fun toys!!This is my favorite, and cheapest toy!! First of all, buy some cheap multi-colored hair ties, the ones that stretch. Then, cut all of them so they are just long bands. Now, here is the tricky part, tie them all together so they form one big fun looking multi-colored string!! Then, just tie that on to one of the bars on top of the cage, or where ever you can. It is so fun to chew, and the hours of fun, oh the fun!!! Squawk!!!! I love tearing that thing apart!! PS: You can also just keep them single and not cut, but only when your owner is with you and you are out of that cage, be carful!!
This is my second favorite toy. Okay, now, here is what you need to make it with. You need, colorful paper clips, you can get them almost anywhere. Now, all you have to do, is hook them all together to make a colorful string of paper clips!! Just hook them onto the cage bars, anywhere you can!!I love this toy, but make sure that it is used only with us small birds, you know, up to size cockatiel.

Pull Me Beads
Submitted by: Judy Allbright - October 08, 1998 materials: 1 ea. 6" piece of UNTREATED 2"x2" pine wood
Bird toy can be used for Medium&Large Size Birds
3 feet of 1/4" cotton or jute rope
6 ea. 1 1/2" beads (unpainted)
3/8" drill bit
1 eyebolt
Drill 3 ea. 3/8" holes thru wood, 2 holes all the way thru the wood.
Give the wood one turn and drill a hole all the way thru the that
side. Cut rope into thirds and thread a piece thru each hole. If
you tape the end of the rope with masking tape prior to threading,
it will keep the rope from freying and make the task much easier.
Put a bead on each end of the rope (with the block in the center).
Tie a knot to hold the bead on the rope. The rope should be able
to be pulled back and forth with the beads acting as stops on each
end. Screw in eyelbolt and hang in cage. Birds can spend hours
pulling the beads back and forth. It might be a good idea to make
2 or 3 of these at a time as eventually, the birds will chew them
up. See drawing sent previously.

Stitch Holder Chewing Toy
Submitted by: Alexis Carere - carere.fam.tor@sympatico.ca - November 17, 1998 I had made a toy for my budgie-one of those simple with beads and buttons but he finally started to wear it out to the point where it was falling off. Looking around for something to hang it back up with I found- Crocheting Stitch holder Hooks! I hung the toy back up with and found that he was playing with the clips more than the toy. So I put some clips on the end of the toy and now he just loves it!
Bird toy can be used for Small&Medium Size Birds
Stitch Holder Clips can be found at any place like wal-mart or zellers or any cheap store in the knitting section for about 1.99$ After you make your toy, whatever it may be, just clip a few hooks onto each other and then clip the last one into the knot of string at the end. My budgie Azure loves the toy and enjoys climbing up and down and trying to undo the clips, which is quite impossible for a budgie mind you. It's a good toy for budgies that are small to medium. A Simple Hanging Toy
Submitted by: Jamie W. - twoodard@dtx.net - November 29, 1998 This is a very simple hanging toy to make, it only takes 30 seconds to a minute to complete. You take some strong string or twine, I used some some small, tightly braided rope, and wrap some pipe cleaners around it and make it thick at the bottom. My parakeet loves to swing it with his head.I don't know if this would work good for larger birds, they would proably tear it up really quick.

For Over-Preeners & Pluckers
Submitted by: Amber Ballinger - a@fox.org - December 03, 1998 Our Scarlet Macaw has been completely cured of over-preening by providing a feather duster for her cage. I purchased one of the real ostrich feather dusters for her on a whim in an effort to avoid medication. It has worked miracles ! Be sure that you purchase a duster with genuine un-dyed feathers and hang it in the cage so that the cinch at the top that holds the feather onto the handle is out of reach or it won't last long.

Buttons, Beads and Clothes Pins
Submitted by: Tiffany - December 04, 1998 In any craft store one can find over size buttons for kids projects. These buttons are great for birds because of their bright colors and interesting shapes. I took these buttons and some round wooden beads that my White Cap Pionus, Sargent Pepper, could destroy if he wanted to, and strung them on a thick piece of hemp rope (or cotton) and tied them to his cage. It's really easy. Then I had found some wooden clothes pins, not the ones with the springs, and drilled small holes in them and made different toys with them. Sargent loves to chew apart the wood and move the buttons around on the rope. The toys are fun because the buttons aren't easily destroyed and the wood is and the rope is fun to fray. Every time I visit the craft store I find other things to add that are safe. Keep rope trimmed for safety.

NOTE: Always make sure what you give your bird is safe and is right for the size of the bird.

Climbing Rope
Submitted by: Katie - January 15, 1999 First cut three strips of fabric. The width & length should depend on the size of the bird. For my GCC I used 2' long, 2" wide strips and braided them together, adding knots as I went along. I left a couple inches unbraided at the top so I could tie the rope to the top of the cage. Ta da! I perfect piece of excercise equipment for your feathered friend to climb on! Note-Make sure to trim any threads off of the fabric before and after you braid it, and as it becomes worn to avoid tangling toenails.
