Plastic Bead Necklaces
Submitted by: Kerri Ward - lonnaward@msn.com - January 17, 1999 Buy some cheap, plastic, bead necklaces that you would buy for your little daughter and just hang them inside the cage. My tiels love to pull, play tug-of-war, chew, and grab the necklaces with their feet. Try it! My birds absolutely love it! Note: Be sure not to use beads small enough to be swallowed.

Sunkist's Ingenious Idea
Submitted by: Erica - March 06, 1999 Hi:
Bird toy can be used for Small&Medium Size Birds
I am 13 years old and I support my lovebird (Sunkist) on the allowance I hardly get because I don't clean up my room and "The Lovebird Account" money is always a little tight. I just realized that I spent $5 on a toy I could have made in about a minute myself. Here's how:
Get some heavy string that is not dyed. Cut 6 even pieces of it, the pieces should be pretty long. Braid the string, stopping at intervals to put on those cheap plastic craft beads you have. Then tie a knot at the end and presto you've got an exact replica of the toy I should have never spent money on!

Koolade & hemp
Submitted by: Trina - April 11, 1999 You'll need:
Bird toy can be used for All Size Birds
-a roll of hemp, thickness depends on the size of your bird(s)
-untreated wood beads, spools, or wood shapes found in the woodworking section of your craft store (make sure the holes in the beads are large enough to fit the hemp through)
-a few packages of Koolade. I find cherry, lime, blue raspberry, and grape are the best colors
Take your wood shapes after you've drilled holes in them, use a small container, (I use baby food jars) and mix a package of koolade with about two oz of water- NO SUGAR- and let your wood pieces soak. After a few hours, take them out and let them dry. Then string them onto your hemp. Tie knots between each bead to add strength, and use a Quik link or just tie it to the cage. My tiels, budgies, and finches love it!

New Knot Toy
Submitted by: ldr1 - May 27, 1999 Using the round hollow cactus sticks recently available, thread very small knotted leather strips thru the holes. Lots of them. The wood is very light and the only toys my birds really love is to attack knots.
Bird toy can be used for Small&Medium Size Birds
Actually, this is not true. I would also suggest a long row of buttons and button holes from an old shirt for them to undo. You may have to keep sewing the buttons on, but my birds love it.
The key here is chewing.

Darla the Eclectus, CPA
Submitted by: phyllis wright - phylliswright@hotmail.com - May 30, 1999 I needed some destructo toy, for my female eclectus, and put a roll of adding machine tape on her play tree. She spent many happy momemts punching holes and shredding and throwing the paper which rolls off and creates wondrous places to hide. It also makes her tree even more festive, with great ribbons of paper hanging, looping, and rustling.

Dixie Cup Chewers
Submitted by: Crystal - ROKINCRK@aol.com - August 28, 1999 Punch 5 - 10 small holes around the rim of a PLASTIC OR PAPER DIXIE CUP. Thread a few different colored strands of STRING and YARN from the holes and tie loose KNOTS in them so your bird can try to untie the knots. Hang it upside down from the top of the cage. You can also hang a bell (careful of a loose clanger) on the inside of the cup. It jingles when your bird is playing with the strands of yarn and punching it's beak thru the cup.

Paper Plate Treats
Submitted by: Sophie Diaz - October 16, 1999 I hide a small treat in a paper plate (not plastic coated), fold the plate so the treat stays inside, put a hole through the middle, and put a piece of leather cord through the middle of the plate. I hang these in my greys cages and they love to chew apart the plate to get out the treat.

Wooden Spools
Submitted by: Donna Cutler - November 28, 1999 My Amazon loves to play with this toy made from wooden spools and jute or some other type of rope purchased at a hardware store. The spools are about 5 cents each and you can use as many as you wish. Thread a length of the jute through each spool, tying a knot at the bottom of each spool to keep it from falling off. String as many spools as you like. Then suspend it from your bird's cage and he can remove the spools one by one as he chews off the jute. I use a fairly thick rope, as this keeps him occupied for longer periods of time. The spools fall to the floor and are then washed and reused. He never tires of this.

Gabriel's favorite pasttime: Scrapsurprise
Submitted by: cathy - cross-n-heart@webtv.net - December 13, 1999 I am the proud owner of two very busy Moluccans named Gabriel and Peaches and it actually takes them several days to get through the scrapsurprize!!!
Bird toy can be used for All Size Birds
1. Go to your favorite fabric or craft shop and purchase many different colors of 100% cotton fabric. I buy 1/4 yd pcs.
2. Cut long length into half horizontally.
3. Use a rotary cutter with a pinking blade and cut 1" wide strips.
4. Buy a long large completely closed link dog chain collar.
5. Tie 2 to 4 pieces of multi patterned strips onto each chain link.
6. I also take things like beads, spools, etc and tie them with fabric so they hide under the other strips of fabric.
7. Make sure to trim the edges often with pinking shears to stop birds from getting caught on strings.
Gabriel and Peaches spend hours untying the strips and exploring all the hidden treasures underneath.

Dowel branch
Submitted by: Monique - Nikchick23@hotmail.com - January 24, 2000 Find the thickest size branch around the house or in the park (clean and bake in the oven to kill any pests). Get a half inch drill bit and drill all the way through it. Then buy a half inch dowel from the hardware store and cut it to the lengths you want (make all differant lengths so your bird can climb up to the top). Then hammer them into the hole in the branch. Then sand off and put a metal hook at the top and hang in the cage. Its a 4 dollar job.

The Bird Mobile
Submitted by: chelsea - cmartin87@yahoo.com - April 03, 2000 Hi, i'm going to tell you how to make a bird mobile. First you need 1 paper towel roll. Then gather objects around the house such as beads, hair ties (cut them and make a long string of them), small keychains that their heads can't get stuck in it, etc. Tie them tightly with string and cut holes in the tube and put the string in the holes so they won't come out. Then keep repeating this with other objects. I hope your bird enjoys it. You could also use a hanger and tie the string on the bottom of the triangle part.

Hanging Beads & Bells.
Submitted by: A. K. Linegar - June 11, 2000 I recently found an old box of friendship bracelets belonging to my sister. They make a perfect bird toy. I looped the thick end of the bracelet over one of the ceiling bars of the cage and attached it with a metal clip to where the threads branch. I strung 2 bells and 4 large beads on the remaining two threads. My Budgie spent hours playing with his new toy.

Bracelet Strings
Submitted by: China - twiztedchina@aol.com - June 21, 2000 I just bought my first budgie a few days ago and I had to think of a toy to get her. So when I got home I looked around my house for something.
Bird toy can be used for Small Size Birds
I found these old neon bracelets I used to wear. I took several of them, cut them so they'd be a string instead of a loop and tied them together with one knot at the top. Suzy has been playing with it periodically since I got her.
These bracelts are kinda "trendy" right now so you might be able to find them at jewlery or craft stores.

Tennisball Toy
Submitted by: Carolyn - August 04, 2000 Here's a toy that your bird can swing on or push back and forth. Take a tennisball and poke a small hole in it. Now take a shoelace or thin rope and tie a knot at the end of it. Force the knot through the hole- once it's in, you can use a gluegun and glue around the knot in the hole to help it stay in. Tie the toy on the top of the cage. This might not cost you anything if you have spare tennisballs and shoelaces or rope!

Three Sided Kindling Box
Submitted by: Laura Bothman - August 14, 2000 I call this the Kindling Box because that's exactly what your little birds will make as they destroy this toy.
Bird toy can be used for All Size Birds
Depending on the size of your bird you will need some 1X? pine boards. My birds are Moluccan Cockatoos, so I purchased 1X12 pine boards. You want three sides and a top on your box and no bottom. I made my boxes 2 feet tall. Again this depends on the size of your bird.
After you have your sides together and the top on, you want to install a perch inside, making sure your bird has some head room. I put my boxes together with screws (round the ends so the kids don't hurt themseves), using three on each seam. After your box is together with the perch installed you want to hang it either in or on their cage. I used nuts, bolts and washers for this, or you could stand it on their play area. Then stand back and watch the splinters fly.
This is real chewing fun for your destructive little guys and gals that will last a while. I even save pieces for starting the wood stove. For me it was either this or give them the dining room table and chairs.

Key Chain
Submitted by: Sheila - rendezvu2@juno.com - August 17, 2000 After having spent quite a bit of money over the last two years on bird toys that last only a week or so, we finally found the one toy that our African Grey adores. As an added bonus, she can't tear it up!
Bird toy can be used for All Size Birds
I took one of the now empty chains that used to hold wooden trinkets and rawhide strips and I attached one of those old fashioned keys onto the end using a single chain link (the kind that you hang toys with). Our bird hangs from this toy all day long and since it is located on a long bar, she can slide it around with her or use it as a "vine" to do her tarzan impressions. She's such an acrobat... make sure to keep your eye on the bird though, as I'd hate to see one get a toenail caught in the chain.
Note: Do not use a key which contains lead or zinc.

Sam's Teddy Bear
Submitted by: Cheryl and David - renegade1514@hotmail.com - September 10, 2000 Our pride and joy Sam is a cockatiel. I took a 6" teddy bear and cut slits in the back. Two on top and two on the bottom. I strung shoelaces through the slits and tied them to the cage so that the bear was inside and the laces were outside. He LOVES it! He preens it, sings to it, and sleeps cuddled up to it at night. He even feeds it. I have to wash it every now and then because it has food on it's face. I also think it helps him when we are working so he doesn't get lonely.

Peanut Butter Buttons
Submitted by: Carrie - November 11, 2000 My teil Picco loves his new toy! Take a bunch of old plastic 4-holed buttons and string them by one of the holes onto a piece of string or twine. Don't put knots or anything to separate them, being close together is part of the challenge! Rub peanut butter into the other holes (buttons with bigger holes work best) and hang it in the bird's cage. They will have hours of fun poking out the small morsels of peanut butter. (You can also use a honey and millet mixture, or just honey, anything that will stay in the holes.) Enjoy!

Coconut Swing-Thing
Submitted by: Venessa - March 24, 2001 For small birds like budgies, finches, etc. Take half of a empty coconut. Get a rubber-band rope. Drill a SMALL hole roughly at the bottom middle of the coconut. Thread the rubber band rope through the hole. To make sure that the rubber band doesn't unthread itself, attach a clothspin or something. Fill the coconut up with bird seed. Attach it anywhere in a cage. The birds might fly and land on top of the coconut swing-thing and it will bounce up and down. Plus a handy food dispenser. Provides a new cool look to the bird's home. Natural. Fun. Easy.

Newspaper Fun
Submitted by: Danya Dhanak - November 15, 2001 Cut strips of newspaper (all in the same size), hold them together, cut a hole at the top, or punch a hole, put on a C-link and put it on your birds cage! Please supervise your bird while playing with it because he/she might get stuck in it. Also, before you put the toy on your birds cage, see if he/she is afraid of it. If so, let the bird get used to it first.

Head Sock Toy
Submitted by: Christine - Animalperson101@hotmail.com - January 17, 2002 You need a sock, some thread, some string or rope, and some scissors.
Bird toy can be used for All Size Birds
1.Cut the sock in half, keeping the top.
2.Take the top half and sew the top of it together (use the top because it isn't all bent to fit a person's foot). Make sure the top opening is completely closed and there are no loose threads.
3.Decorate the material by sewing on buttons (buttons should be large so the bird won't choke). Sew on some extra material to make pockets to hide treats in.
4.Tie the string or rope securely on the sock and hang in the cage or playpen.
My bird was a little scared at first, but after awhile he got enough courage to pull the buttons, eat the treats, and he even stuck his head inside! Use bigger socks for larger birds.

Deallo's peg !
Submitted by: Jason James - mail@niceday2day.fsnet.co.uk - March 31, 2002 This one's easy! Take a plastic peg from your laundry basket (making sure it's safe). Then put the peg through one of the bars at the top of the cage making sure that the grip is on the inside and the spring on the outside. Then put a treat in the peg. It should slide and move around so that your bird has to work for it. My ten week old senegal (deallo)love's his little yellow peg.

Just an Idea
Submitted by: Reid & my budgie, Ekco - reidfink@compusmart.ca - April 02, 2002 These are the steps to making a homemade budgie toy. Materials You Will Need
Bird toy can be used for Small Size Birds
-1 Dixie paper cup
-3-6 small, colorful beads (wooden is best, for them to chew on)
-About a 1' 6" piece of sinew or bailer's twine
-A small cowbell (be sure clapper is secure and not made of zinc)
-A straw1. Poke a small hole at the top of the paper cup with a pencil. Take the twine and tie about six knots (however many so that the beads will not possibly fall off) in the same place on the twine.
2. Take a bead and put it at the bottom of the twine so only the knots are keeping the bead from falling off. Cut about 2cm of straw and slide that down the twine so it rests on the bead. Then slide down another bead.
3. Thread the end of the bailer's twine through the hole in the top of the paper cup. If the twine has separated, smooth it back together by stroking it with your thumb and index finger. Tie a knot that the paper cup will rest on. Slide a bead down the twine and it will rest on the paper cup.
4. Clip the cowbell on the twine between the straw and bottom bead. Tie the toy to one of the bars of your bird's cage, so the bottom of the bell hangs at about chest height on your bird.

Submitted by: Teri - April 05, 2002 When we bring home a new batch of eggs from the market, they go into the refridgerator, and the carton goes into our cockatoo's cage, by natural string. We just string it up and hang it from the top, and Maynard (the cockatoo) has hours of fun destroying it.

Pine Cone on a String
Submitted by: carly - cinderellasparrot@hotmail.com - June 25, 2002 Very very easy toy! Take one nice clean pine cone (not one thats been on the ground for weeks) and a piece of string (I use sisal). Start at the skinny end of the cone where the 'spikes' are far apart. Wind the string around between the spikes, making sure the string is tight and goes as close to the middle of the cone as possible. The closer you get to the base of the cone, the smaller the gaps, and the string will eventually not fit through the gaps any more. The string should hold the pinecone up by itself (no knots for parrots to undo and send your new toy to the floor!). Attach a bulldog clip to the other end of the string or just tie to the cage. My ringneck loves to chew the pinecone to pieces. For extra fun I attach mine to a large chain that hangs down in his cage. He hangs from the chain and wrestles with the pine cone.

It Looks Store Bought
Submitted by: lucy - Chemeche@aol.com - July 05, 2002 You will need canvas(or any strong fabric) and a key ring (one that won't come undone or pinch a bird's foot.
Bird toy can be used for All Size Birds
Cut the canvas into a rectangle (any size it depends on the bird). Cut two lines into it without seperating the pieces. Slip the key ring onto one of the three connected arms that you created with the canvas. Then all you have to do is braid it, randomly slipping large beads and nick nacks through one of your canvas arms and braiding on. At the end, tie two ends together creating the apperance of a bow tied around a pig tail at the end. Attach the creation to a bar in your cage using the key ring.

Beads And Yarn
Submitted by: ashton - March 20, 2003 I have a cockatiel named Smokey. I just took yarn and braided it and randomly placed large beads in it and hung it at the top of his cage. He loves it as well as a perch. I braided it and put large beads in it and kept braiding until it was large enough in width for his feet. They were made out of the stuff I found in the craft room of my house. Hope your bird enjoys it.

Hanging Basket
Submitted by: Sarah - March 24, 2003 This is a toy that your bird will love. I made this for my birds, and I have 1 medium sized Quaker bird and 3 small Zerbra Finches. All you have to do is get a basket and heavy duty string (not thread or any thing that can hurt your bird). Tie off the string the right size (compared to the size of the cage). After that take your basket and make an opening in 1 side of it that will be the "door" for your bird. If you do not want to damage the basket, you can leave the top off. Now for the top of the basket. You get fabric and sew it on the top of the basket so that you just have the opening in the side. This can be used as a shelter or just a toy.

Budgies Especially
Submitted by: Shashi - March 29, 2003 I got two lengths of a sort of leather 'string' (be sure to use safe vegetable tanned leather), though I suppose any type of (strong) string will do. Its length depends on the size of your bird's cage. Then I slid several (five) beads on each 'string' that were too big for my budgie, Kiwi, to swallow. They don't have to be beads. Then I took the two strings like they were one (by that I mean held the beginning and end of the beaded strings together) and tied the two beginnings on the bird cage roof, right above one of his perches, then tied the other ends together somewhere else in the cage ( ie another part of the roof) letting it hang. Kiwi was curious (not to say he wasn't wary of it for the first few mins) and now enjoys sliding the beads up and down the string, trying to get them off, and even climbing on it.

Pull Through Toy
Submitted by: Adrienne Kleid - adkleid@attbi.com - April 21, 2003 My idea is for birds who love to chew on everything! I took some thick wire that stays in place, and bent curly Q's in it (about 4-8) about the diameter of a pinky finger. Then I connected the two ends. After this I got rat-tail cord (it can't be plastic cord) and strung it through all the curly Q's. After this I put a large bead at either end and tied a knot to keep them on (the beads have to be big enough to not pull through the knot and the curly Q's). Hang it in the cage and let your bird pull the beads back and forth (watch the toy for a few days to make sure that none of the beads have come off). My birds play with their's alot!

Finch Shredder Tassel
Submitted by: Anna - June 06, 2003 Male finches love stringy things that look a bit like nesting materials. I took 3 pieces of jute twine (about 5 inches long) and tied them together at the center. I took a 4th piece of twine and tied it to the center of the first bundle so that there is a long strand from the 4th piece. I then strung some pony beads on the longer strand of twine (this is the hanger). Finally, I frayed the other strands of the twine to make a tassel. They really enjoy this one! Be careful their feet don't get tangled in the tassel.

Then seperate hemp into 3 two ply strands and braid all together forming a thick hemp braid. Make sure that the strands are laying flat next to each other. Finally leaving about 4-5" from the end stop braiding and take the hemp into 2 three strand pieces and tie together into one knot. With the remaining hemp, tie it to the top of your cage for one great treat and a leftover toy. Takes 5 minutes and is easy.
