Coconut Hide And Treat
Submitted by: haley short - codyashleigh2002@yahoo.co.nz - June 23, 2003 Cut a coconut in half and empty it out. Drill holes thru the middle of the two halves and thread a shoelace thru it. Tie knots at the ends of the shoelace and attach a carrabeina clip. You can then hang from the top of the cage and put treats in the centre of the two halves. The birds lift the top half or nudge it and get the treats.
Bird toy can be used for All Size Birds
I like hiding treats as in the wild they spend alot of time searching for food. Keeps my guys entertained!

Ring String
Submitted by: Maria - the_stinky_cheese_man@hotmail.com - June 29, 2003 All you need to do is tie a Qwik link at the top of a piece of string. Then just tie a ring (you can buy cheap rings at the dollar store) every inch or so along the string. Hang in your bird's cage and watch them have fun!! Be sure rings are large enough so the bird's head won't get caught.

Button Mania!
Submitted by: Emily - emily@thebozone.om - July 16, 2003 I tried this with my Friends Budgie... Tie a knot in one end of a string and slide buttons on it. Every other button, tie a knot then tie a large knot at the end. Tie it to the top of the cage and the bird can slide the buttons up and down usually chewing on them. My friends budgie (named bud) had a blast!!! He wouldn't stop playing with it in that day after 3 hours!!!

Parakeet Rawhide Toy
Submitted by: Stefanie Spaulding - September 06, 2003 This is a very simple project to do. It can be used for all birds, but Apollo and Jasmine are both parakeets, so if you want to do this for a larger bird, adjust the proportions accordingly.
Bird toy can be used for Small&Medium Size Birds
First, buy a pair of rawhide shoelaces (vegetable tanned for safety), and buy or find a bell (NOT the jingle bell type--those can be dangerous) and some pony beads, or larger beads if you so desire. Cut two pieces of the rawhide, different lengths (you decide on the lengths)and tie the bell to the longer piece. Just above the bell, thread a bead. (If you are using pony beads, you may have to twist the rawhide a little to thread it through.) Then about an inch above the bead, tie another knot. Thread another bead, tie another knot and so on, until you have about 3 inches left of the rawhide. Then on the shorter one, do the same thing. Tie the top of the shorter one onto the longer one, and tie the longer one onto the top of the cage. Wait a few hours and then watch your birds try to peck at it and bite it, and try to ring the bell. They really like this idea!

Water Bottle Caps
Submitted by: Lynn Bradley - whislingsadie@msn.com - November 02, 2003 I have a Goffins Cockatoo named Sadie,she is now 2 years old.
Bird toy can be used for Medium Size Birds
Over the summer we were drinking a lot of bottled water and she loved to chew up the bottle caps. They were made of hard plastic and it kept her busy for a little while. I'm not sure if it was safe to let her do that but she didn't ever swallow any of the plastic from the bottle tops that she chewed up. She would spit it out.
Well anyway I was thinking you could string them together on some type of string that was safe for birds, They would really keep the goffins very busy. Sadie is very special to me and very cuddly. She needs a lot of attention, so if something like that is really safe that is something she really likes to play with.

Chirpy's Chach-Ca Chain
Submitted by: Ellen.S - December 01, 2003 Squawk!Hello!I'm Chirpy The Parakeet! and I'm going to show you how to make my very own Chach-Ca Chain!!! First, take small and large paperclips,[purchased at office supply stores]and string them in a pattern [big, small, etc] to desired length. The clips should all have the ending piece of wire going up in a left, right pattern.
Bird toy can be used for Small Size Birds
Now you can get birdy creative! Find small items,[such as pony beads,twistie-ties and anything that can be strung onto a paperclip], and slide the objects onto the ending tip of wire on each clip. You can put as many things on the chain as you like. And last, but not least, find a large item, such as an earing or a small cowbell, and hang it from the very end of the chain. Tip:a good idea would be to make sure that all the ending pieces of wire are curled over another piece of the clip to avoid your bird from accidently removing one of objects or getting hurt by the ends. "Well, squawk! I hope you and your bird have a fun time making this great toy!!!

Paper Octopus
Submitted by: Brooke - December 08, 2003 cut up strips of any kind of safe paper, cardboard, newspaper, or the crinkly colorful party strips(used for confetti)in the right size for your bird. Hold them in the middle and then secure with a zip tie (not twistie tie, they are dangerous) to the cage bars or a perch. Bend the paper so it hangs down and kind of "ruffle" it up. Your bird will love shredding and preening the toy for hours and it is practically free!

Strings of Thread Spools & Canning Jar Rings
Submitted by: Jeanette - January 21, 2004 This is a toy, poor people used to make toys for toddlers out of. Take cooking string or shoe strings. Knot them together to the right length to hang canning jar rings & or empty wood thread spools threaded on them. If you want color, dip the wood spools in food color or a safe coloring source. Most of todays spools are of hard plastic which I find suitable also. I find baby teething rings of keys (or other objects, which are brightly colored) made of hard plastic will be enjoyed & can be hung in cages for toys. I find them at yard sales & thrift stores cheap and sterilize them. A greatly appreciated toy for my Tiels & African Grey. Many baby toys can be used for birds safely.

Assorted Fun Rings
Submitted by: Stephanie Dickinson - May 29, 2004 I made a fun toy for my cockatiel using a few household items. You need three pieces of string, leather, or anything else that you can thread things onto and make into a circle (obviously, the bigger the bird, the stronger the materials need to be.) On one of the strings, I put a few pieces of leather, tied in circles, and separated by hair bands which I tied around the string. Then I tied the string into a circle and put a key ring on the top. I then used one of the other pieces of string and connected some small colorful beads onto it. I tied that into a circle and connected it onto the same keyring. For the last string, I put holes into some plastic bottle caps and put them on, and connected the circle of string to the keyring. Then you have a hanging toy which has everything - leather to chew, colours, beads to move etc. Obviously, you need to alter the sizes and strength of the material, and the size of the toy, to suit your bird. Please supervise the use of this toy.

Andrč's Chewy String/Rope Toy
Submitted by: bUdGiE_gAl (Sameera) - love_all_pets@hotmail.com - June 15, 2004 Once I made a toy for Andrč that had beads and string, and in between each bead I tied double knots. Andrč ignored the beads, but chewed the knots in between. Then I decided to make a toy with lots of rugged knots for him to chew.
Bird toy can be used for Small&Medium Size Birds
Materials:
String : Minimum - 3 different coloured pieces, Maximum - 8 coloured pieces
Beads : To make it more interesting and fun
Take a piece of each colour of string, and knot them together at the top about 3-4 times. Then tie knots along the way, each 3 or 4 times. Occasionally string a bead and tie it from the other end, so that it hangs sideways. At the end tie a triple knot and hang up in the cage. To make it more rugged you can also first take 3 threads and plait them, repeat this 3 times, then plait together the three small plaits , get it ?!? then follow the same steps for the knots and beads. Andre loves this !!

They Love Q-TIPS!!!!
Submitted by: Anne - June 29, 2004 Simply hang up some Q-tips and they'll have hours of fun. I have two quakers and a 'tiel. They can't get enough of them. They even hold them with their feet and try to pick the cotton off and destroy it. I also found that they love to tear up extra pieces of fabric. Just be careful they don't eat the little threads so they don't choke. :)

Cuttlebone fun!
Submitted by: Kayla - kaylaka1@hotmail.com - July 04, 2004 Hello! When my cockatiel finally ate her cuttlebone to where it broke, I figured out a way to reuse the broken pieces, and make it fun.
Bird toy can be used for All Size Birds
Materiels
Cuttle bone
Pipe cleaner
Buttons, beads, cardboard, or even rawhide
non toxic color die- (optional)
First, die the pipe cleaner if you want, and make sure it is completely dry.
Make a loop at one end of the pipe cleaner, and start filling it in with buttons, exc. about four, and make sure they are about 1/2 a centemeter apart. Fallowd by a piece of cuttle bone, you will have to pierce a hole in it first. Go on as desired, when you reach your desired height, make another hook and tie a cotton string in it and put a paper clip in between the knot, and hang inside of the cage.
Or if you want, you can cut op a whole cuttle bone instead of waiting until it breaks to make this toy.
My cockatiel went for it right away!

Tie a knot at the end. Next, put pipe cleaners through the rest of the holes, and string on buttons, beads, extra. On two of the cleaners, tie a 3-6' piece of millette, or your bird's other favorite treats, onto it. Tie knots on at the end though. I took some friendship bracelet string, and tied a triple knot on the bottom. I put on a bead first, then two cheerios, then another bead, until I had enough. My bird ate all the cheerios in about twenty minutes. Now she has a little bead toy hanging by her perch.

Paper Chew Toys
Submitted by: Stephanie - digyourman@yahoo.com - May 26, 2005
Bird toy can be used for Small&Medium Size BirdsMy Lovebird Gumby doesn't seem to like anything I buy for him to play with. One day he was watching me do some homework, and he jumped onto the desk and ate all of my memo pad page markers that were sticking out of my book (these were the post-it flags- they look like post-its that are cut into thirds). I had a package in 4 bright neon colors, so I stuck them around the table and on his cage, and he went nuts! He just carries a piece around in his mouth until it's completely shredded, and then I give him a new one. The sticky end is good for hanging them or sticking them to flat surfaces- and they come in a bunch of bright colors. Now I have a living room full of little yellow paper shreds, but I have a quiet bird!

15 minutes for 5 Toys!
Submitted by: Alyssa May - xoxbrokenxox@hotmail.com - August 06, 2005
Bird toy can be used for All Size BirdsThese toys are all REALLY easy to make and will be much loved by your birdie!
Materials needed:
-Lots of beads. Bright colors, different shapes.
-Wooden Beads.
-Hemp or bird safe rope
-Little 100% natural straw hats in the craft section of Wal*Mart
-Paper bag*Optional
-Large buttons
-Bird safe bells (no zinc, lead)Lets start with my birds persoanl favorite, 'Bead Mania'
Cut 4 even pieces of hemp rope, as long as you prefer the toy to be, but allow room to tie. Tie the strings together (tie two, tie the other two, then tie all together). Slide beads on each thread. Once your done with a strand, tie a knot big enough to prevent slipping of the beads. After you've done every strand cut off extra string on the bottom and hang in the cage.
-Option: For added fun, add a small bell to the bottom of each strand.Beaded Pinecone
This toy is great because your bird will enjoy the bright beads and chewing on the pinecone! Start by going outside and getting a small pinecone, bake it at 200 degrees for 30 minutes. You CAN use a toaster oven for this. Next, take hemp rope and starting at the bottom of the pinecone, thread the rope around the entire pinecone pulling it close to the middle. You should leave about 2 inches of rope out on the bottom end and a fairly long amount on the other end, depending on how long you'd like the little hoop to be. Add all the beads you want to the hemp and when you're done, tie the ends of it together and hang in cage - fun easy toy!Shreddable Beaded Fun
This one is good for shredding. Cut a piece of hemp rope, it's up to you what size. I used wood beads and regular beads on this - Add one wood bead, 3 regular beads, and then a strip of the paper bag (cut a small hole with sissors), add 3 more regular beads and a wooden bead, more paper, 3 reg. beads, paper, 2 reg beads and a wooden bead, paper, 3 reg beads and 1 wooden. Do whatever pattern you'd like - this is what I did.
Tie each end and clip in cage.Beads and Buttons
This toy is really fun. Take a long piece of hemp and bead it however you wish, then cut a few smaller pieces of hemp and tie large buttons to the end of each one. Bead the strand and tie it to the beaded hemp (about 4 of these).Purely for shredding
This is a great toy. You know those expensive shredders at the pet store? Well, most are just paper and straw your bird tears up - Not worth 13 dollars! All you need for a fun shredder is a straw hat. In the craft section at wal*mart you can purchase packs of small 100% natural straw hats, or one mediem sized and up for about 20cents.
Once you have your hat, take a pair of sissors or a razor blade and cut the string holding the hat together and pull it all out (this is important so your bird doesn't get tangled). Pull the hat apart and pull it a few times so it doesn't curl back into a hat. Fasten a quik clip to one end and hang in the cage.I hope your birdie enjoys these toys. Please e-mail me if you have any questions or would like to see pictures of the toys!

Ceiling Hanger for Hanging Toys
Submitted by: Adam Morris - December 04, 2005
Bird toy can be used for All Size BirdsI was at the local bird store and they had some hangers that seemed neat. You put a ceiling hook in, hang the hanger from it and then the toys hang from the hanger. The idea is that it keeps your bird off of the ceiling, so they can't destroy it.
The ones in the bird store were welded cylinders with loops on each end for $15.95, but I made my own for just a few dollars.
Go to your local DIY store and buy some PVC pipe too thick for your bird to grip. I got 10' of 1.25" inside diameter for $3.95. Also buy two end caps ($0.58 each), two fender washers ($0.13 each), Two eye bolts (with nuts) ($0.98 for the pair) and some PVC glue (I already had some). Drill a hole in each of the caps, insert the eye bolt and on the inside mount a fender washer, a lock washer and the nut. Tighten it. Now cut a length of pipe taller than your bird can reach. Glue one cap on each end. The bird won't be able to get a good grip on the PVC to climb up to damage your ceiling. Total cost was $6.35 but if you have to buy PVC glue and lock washers you might just reach $10. Of course if you want to make a second one, so you have different lengths, it's only an extra $2.40. For less than the $16 if I bought one, I could have made three different lengths.

Ribbon's of Fun
Submitted by: Sandy Green - January 25, 2006
Bird toy can be used for Small&Medium Size BirdsMy Indian Ring neck loves to play with ribbons. It started with playing with a ribbon attached to my dressing gown, and now he loves having one tied to the side of his cage. He spends hours preening them. Just take some coloured ribbon about 20cm long and tie it in a single knot to the side of the cage next to a perch, leaving the ends to trail down. The bird will preen the strands. Just be careful to replace the ribbon often so little toes don't get caught in any loose treads.

Bird toy can be used for Medium&Large Size BirdsI have a too that is picky about toys. So I made this using her extra toy pieces and a plastic hanger. Take a plastic hanger and get some rope. Tie different lengths of rope on the hanger. Then take beads or wooden blocks or any extra toy parts you have and put it on the hanger. Hang the hanger at the top of your birds cage and watch them go crazy. Tiki likes it cause hers has 5 different toys on it. Your birds will not get bored cause there will be so many different toys on it.

Poker Anyone?
Submitted by: Mark Bell - September 22, 2006
Bird toy can be used for All Size BirdsOur Senegal Parrot ( CLOE) loves this toy that I made for her. What I did was I got a box of Red, White and Blue poker chips at Wal - Mart and I drilled a hole in each one at different spots on the chip. I then strung each chip onto a piece of cotton rope and tied a knot under each chip to keep them seperated. I then hung it inside her cage and she loves pulling on it. I think she enjoys hearing the noise that the poker chips make when they hit the side of her cage.

Mission Accomplished
Submitted by: Nobody Knows - January 01, 2007
Bird toy can be used for Small&Medium Size BirdsYa know, I look back at all the times I worried about finding the perfect toy for my cockatiel,Carly, and I laugh. Yeah, laugh. Carly is -oops- WAS a feather plucker until I managed to invent a toy that completly changed her behavior. So, your gonna die if I don't tell you right now right? Okay, okay. So what I did is get a tissue-the soft ones so they feel like real feathers- and make a cone shape out of it. Then, take some colorful string and wrap it around the tissue. Attach it anywhere your bird will want to play with it. After I did it this way a couple times, I got more inventive and started to put beads on the string before I wrapped it around the tissue. Your bird will just pick at it at first but he'll get the hang of it. Carly rips the tissue right out of the string. She doesn't pluck her feather hardly at all anymore. Mission accomplished.

all we did is take one of those fishing lines that you place your fish on after you catch them? the metal one with all the clasps(closures) on it. hopefully you know what im talking about basically its a chain with about 6 or so of those closure/ clasps. they close so its no sharp ends. i hung that; each end on either side of the top of the cage with a slight sway in it. and from the little clasps in between I placed washers and reclosed the clasps. VIOLA!!! they love it they play with the washers and hang from the chain, they have a great time with it all day.

Take off the solid link at one end of the dog chain with bolt cutters, discard. Drill hole into middle of rawhide chips large enough for the chain to pass through. Thread one washer onto chain then add one rawhide chip. Next, thread one whiffle ball(tight fit, I use needle nose pliers to grip chain and pull through) and push two popsicle sticks in each free hole of ball. Add another rawhide chip the another whiffle and sticks until you have reached the top then add last washer and the quicklink. Our 'toos adore these toys, they like to pull out the sticks, turn them into toothpicks, destroy the whiffle balls and drop them into a big mess on the floor of the cage then they get to gnaw up that rawhide, all in all they last a decent amount of time (for our 'toos that's about a week) as long as they are hung where they will not be soiled quickly.

Chico's Super Shoe
Submitted by: ashley - June 25, 2007
Bird toy can be used for Small&Medium Size Birds
this toy i made for my bird with just a few simple things i found around the house
:light weight metal horse shoe
shiny strings or the type for makeing scoobies(fancy knotting)
tiny pinecones
ribbon or rope
and a clip from a lanyard
first remove the nails from the horse shoe, and attach the lanyard clip to a hole in top so the shoe is in a C shape, wrap the rope or shiny strings around the edge leaving the rest hanging down.
tie ribbon or rope through the holes in the bottom and then tie the pinecones to the bottom of the ribbon or rope.
my budgie chico loves the shiny things and flings the horse shoe all over the place.
TIP: if you want to teach your bird to talk male budgies are best and also dont give them a mirror or they will talk in bird to themselves and not pick up on your voice. get them as young as you can so you will bond with them faster.
