Safe Coloring Methods
Submitted by: Diane Trifilo - October, 1996 I make most of my bird toys, too, and here's what I was told are some safe methods:
Bird toy can be used for Large Size Birds
1) Jello mix (unsweetened) or food coloring. Soak wood pieces or clothespins or whatever in jello mix and water for several hours or overnight. This give natural wood soft pastel coloring.
2) For bolder color - I like the method of using the confectionary coloring paste sold in bakery supply stores or where baking accessories are sold in department stores. This thick gel substance makes very bold coloring when only a few drops of water are mixed with a small glob of the paste. I brush this on the wood like paint and the colors are striking.
3) I was told by Gillian that tempra paints sold in all kids craft departments are also nontoxic and safe to use. I bought some pretty florescent color ones and painted those on a few wooden baby blocks I bought at a flea market. Emily, my CAG, LOVES these as hand toys.

Beads, Coloring and Sisal
Submitted by: Tristin - July 24, 1996 For large birds, stick to Marabella beads and unpainted macrame wood beads for making toys. You can color them with food coloring or try frosting coloring in water. String hunks of soft wood on leather strips or natural sisal rope. Buy sisal in the small spools at a variety store, the stuff at the hardware store is treated with creosile. Nasty stuff. Try getting a 2x2x8 fir strip and cutting it in 4" blocks. Color and string. Macaws LOVE it.

Toy Safety Tips from Anne Johnson
Submitted by: Anne Johnson of Avian Antics Bird Toys - November 4, 1996 Look for toys with C-links (commonly called Quick links) as the hanging mechanism. Tighten the C-links with a wrench, not pliers. Other hanging mechanisms are easier to undo and have been know to hook birds' beaks or feet. Chain should be solid welded and smooth. Jack chain is VERY dangerous, so do not purchase toys hung with Jack chain (a twisted, non-welded, 3 ply chain link).

All metal hardware should be lead and zinc free, including bells. Beware of the clappers inside of bells. These can be removed easily by most birds and accidently swallowed. Round rings should be too large or too small for your birds beak, head, and toes to catch. Split key rings should be removed from all toys. Parrots can easily separate the metal and entrap toes and beaks.
Leather pieces and strips should NOT be dyed and should be vegetable tanned. Other tanning processes use chemicals that are toxic to birds. Rawhide should be un-bleached.
Make sure the wood used is listed as safe for birds. Some safe woods are Apple, Arbutus, Ash, Aspen, Beech, Birch, Cactus, Cottonwood, Crabapple, Dogwood, Elm, Fir, Hawthorn, Larch, Manzanita, Pine, Poplar, and Willow. Oak is NOT safe for birds.
Vegetable food coloring or unsweetened Kool-aid can be used to color the wood shapes. Use vegetable dyes only. Other dyes may be harmful if ingested
Acrylic and Marbella plastic are also used in toy construction. These products are considered safe as long as not ingested.
Toys which are too small or include too small parts may pose safety concerns. Smaller pieces can be easily broken and accidently swallowed. Avoid small beads for larger birds.
If you are going to glue toy parts together, make sure the glue is non-toxic, such as Elmers Children's glue. Plumbers glue can also be used as it is safe after it completely dries. BUT, it does emit toxic fumes during the application process and should be used in a well ventilated area that is in a separate building from your birds. Acrylic and Marbella plastic also emit toxic fumes during the cutting and drilling process so take special care while performing these processes.

Beware of Cotton Rope
Submitted by: Anne Johnson of Avian Antics Bird Toys - November 4, 1996 Cotton rope toys pose a SERIOUS threat to the safety of your birds. I only recommend that cotton rope toys be used under direct supervision. As the cotton rope frays, it becomes a dangerous deadly trap. Birds can become entangled in the frayed pieces. Injuries that have resulted from being caught in rope toys range from amputation of single digits to an entire foot. The worst cases that I know of are birds who strangled to death while struggling to free themselves. Sisal rope is a safer alternative to cotton rope

Check Bells Carefully
Submitted by: Joanie Doss - amazons@Alaska.NET - June 17, 1997 I have seen many toys I would love to buy for my Amazons but won't because of the bell that is put on the toy. Some of these bells are downright dangerous. The following are some of the things I found about bells:
Bird toy can be used for All Size Birds
1. The material they used to make the bell. Some of the metals are not bird safe.
2. The clapper in the bells are not attached so that they can take the rough play. Those beaks can break the clapper from the bell in record time. Also some of the clappers are made from lead.
3. Many toys say they are for Amazons but the bell is not strong enough or big enough to withstand Amazon assaults.
4. Some bells are dangerous at the top where they attach to a chain. The space where they attach is a size where a toe or beak can get stuck.
5. The bell is well made and right for Amazons but the method to attach it to the cage can pierce through a foot or beak.
Amazons love bells. They love to shake them and make deafening noises with them. It is a shame that a toy they love so much could actually hurt them. I have some large ones that I bought many years ago that my guys have used for over 15 years.

Warning On Plastic Tops Of Water Bottles
Submitted by: Valerie Wixen - vwixen@tfb.com - January 03, 1998 Like every other Grey owner out there, I take the cost of toys into consideration. I learned my lesson about trying to save money on the cost of a toy for my Grey when I looked over to see what Mychie had done with the plastic top for the sports water bottle that I'd given her. You know...the kind you suck the water from. Anyway, to my horror, she wasn't just trying to get the colored part to pop away from the white part...she wasn't just chewing...she was actually *eating* the plastic! A quick call to my vet confirmed that it could be dangerous. If it didn't go right through her, it could cause an impaction. I then read an article in the e-zine Winged Wisdom that gave me further cause for alarm. The article is at http://www.birdsnways.com/wisdom/ww18eiv.htm and is all about dangerous toys for children. It seems that some SOFT PVC and vinyl toys contain toxic substances which can leach when chewed or sucked. After I read the article I wondered if those water bottle tops are safe for bird *or* human.

DO NOT FLAVOR WOOD!
Submitted by: Beth - February 08, 1998 PLEASE, PLEASE PLEASE DO NOT FLAVOR WOOD (rope, etc.) you use for your birds! You may want to add "color" to the wood, but PLEASE do NOT add a flavor! You don't want to tempt your birds to ingest the wood, and adding a flavor may do just that. Please DO NOT use any flavorings (jello, Kool-Aid, juices, whatever!)

If you want to COLOR wood, try using a food coloring & add a little vinegar to make the color set better.

Be Really Careful What You Give Your Bird!
Submitted by: Stacey - staceylc@hotmail.com - May 29, 1999 My pet cockatiel, Mango, loves climbing ladders. So I bought him this pretty little plastic ladder that hooks on with others (it came with three) and put it in his cage. Later I noticed that he was picking at it with a lot of strength, so I went and checked and it turned out that he had pulled out a little bolt and it was just small enough that he could have swallowed it. Fortunately he was not hurt. So please look at toys carefully before you buy them.

* if you use chicken wire for the walls, you need to thoroughly clean in either a weak acid diluted with water or a non poisonous detergent. Be sure there are no sharp bits sticking out to hurt your bird(s).
*if you have wood for a frame you must be sure it is well sanded.
*and be sure your bird has enough room to fly.

Is Sisal Safe???
Submitted by: Marc Lucas - big-guy@texas.net - December 07, 2001 A few weeks ago I visited a local pet store searching for toys. As I examined one of the sisal rope toys, I read the warning that stated "Do not leave toy in cage unattended". I scoffed at the warning thinking it was "stupid". Two weeks later, we woke up to find our Quaker's foot tangled in the frayed ends of the toy. Luckily no damage was done and I learned a valuable lesson.

Never minimize the possible dangers of "safe" toys and materials.
Inventive children can find ways to make the safest things dangerous. Just remember that birds are children too!!!

PlayTray
Submitted by: john jackson - johnjackson@cockatoos.org - February 01, 2002 We have an extremely intelligent and playful Triton, George, for whom we are constantly seeking new interests. He adores Fisher Price toys which either get destroyed or boredom prevails. He has always been interested in texture and noises, and we have found an interest he doesn't tire of. You need an old baking tray and clean washed natural gravel (pebbles 23mm-15mm) to partly fill it! He spends many happy hours lifting, dropping, rubbing, throwing, etc., give it a try, gravel is cheap!

Beware of Fibers!
Submitted by: Muffin - March 28, 2002 My bird has been ripping the fibers out of one of those woody toys that has yarn knots in it, and it may be causing her problems. She has a yeast crop infection that has two factors playing in on it: a molt and the production of eggs. Her consumption of the toy's fibers may have impacted her condition, or it may not. But be careful with small birds and toys with strings, they like to eat them somtimes, and it may irritate the crop.

Batteries Are Not A Good Idea
Submitted by: ella - June 17, 2002 Someone submitted the idea of tying a large battery in your birds cage so it could swing it back and forth. However, I don't think this is a good idea as a: the bird might injure itself, b:,battery acid may leak out. A better idea is to attach a pingpong ball with a bell in it or without.

Cotton Rope
Submitted by: www.beaktweets.com - bt@beaktweets.com - August 22, 2003 When buying rope toys for your bird, make sure that it is made with Supreme 100% cotton rope. This soft cotton rope is made specifically for birds using only natural fibers & is not polished for strength. You can tell by pulling on the fibers - you should be able to pull the fibers apart.

Tissue Hazards ?!?
Submitted by: bUdGiE_gAl (Sameera) - love_all_pets@hotmail.com - June 18, 2004 I read somewhere that toys made with tissue and paper towels (especially high-absorbency ones) can prove very dangerous for bird.
Bird toy can be used for All Size Birds
If a bird swallows them by mistake they can lay flat in the throut indtaed of going down to the stomach. there it absorbs all the fluids in the birds mouth (err beak !!) and can choke your bird !
So monitor your bird when he/she is playing with tissue toys, and make sure it knows not to swallow it.. ! :)

Glue
Submitted by: clara - June 27, 2004 Don't use glue guns near birds. The fumes have killed some.

I have also heard they shlouldn't play with toilet/tissue rolls because the glue is not safe. A safer glue can be made out of flour and water.

T-Shirt Danger
Submitted by: Jade - February 04, 2005
Bird toy can be used for All Size BirdsI'm a relatively new parrot owner, and I have a three year old Jenday called Sherman. I've taken great care to avoid using materials in his cage that he could ever get caught in. Today I came home and Sherman was hanging by his foot, his tiny little toes swollen two and a half times as big as usual. He had been caught in the cloth that his previous owner had put in his teepee, and had wrapped it not only around his band and his leg, but around his swing as well.
My warning is to watch out for any cloth that could ever possibly fray! Rope isn't the only danger. Had we been minutes later, his foot would have had to have been amputated.
